Henry tried to make it up to his wife for the unkind things he had said, promising to take her to the theatre in London in the autumn and started going more often to her bed, but drew the line at sleeping with her. Their lovemaking was good as ever and yet Lizzie seemed distant and he could not put his finger on it.

Guilt was eating at Lizzie, especially as she had let the vicar make love to her in the church, some would say that was sacriledge. Despite this in her dreams she longed for it to happen again, what was wrong with her? She still went every Friday to clean the church and was relieved that the vicar did not come anywhere near.

While she was arranging the flowers she began to consider leaving her husband and finding a small house to live in on her own. There was only one drawback with this idea, her son Alan. Taking her elbow Jeffrey guided her round the large garden which was very well kept. Beyond lay an orchard with rosy apples ready to pick, it was such a delightful country scene. After tea on the terrace Mary was invited inside and shown over the house which had nothing out of place. Everything was in good taste from furniture to carpets and beautiful paintings hung in every room.

Shall we retire to the sitting room?” Jeffrey asked.

Mary looked at her watch, “Well just for a little while then I will have to go.”

It was a beautiful room with pale lemon walls and striking floral curtains. Mary was standing taking it
